Almería is a coastal city and provincial capital in southeastern Spain, facing the Mediterranean Sea. The landscapes surrounding Almería are among the most unusual in Spain. Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park protects volcanic cliffs, salt flats, reefs, beaches, secluded coves, and dry scrubland along the Mediterranean. Inland, the Tabernas Desert contains eroded ravines, bare hills, and sparse vegetation and has served as a filming location for many westerns and other international productions. Within the city, the Cable Inglés is a restored iron ore loading pier that recalls Almería’s mining and industrial connections. It now functions as a public walkway extending above the waterfront beside the harbor.
Almería’s cuisine relies heavily on seafood, vegetables, olive oil, and produce from the surrounding countryside. Local dishes include gurullos con conejo, prepared with small pieces of handmade pasta and rabbit, and ajo colorao, which combines potatoes, peppers, garlic, and fish. Tapas are an established part of local dining, with bars across the city serving small dishes alongside drinks.
