Tofino is a small coastal community on the western edge of Vancouver Island, surrounded by Pacific Ocean waters, forested mountains, islands, and temperate rainforest. It sits within the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Region. Once known primarily for fishing and logging, Tofino has developed into a community closely associated with surfing, marine activities, outdoor recreation, and environmental stewardship. Its location at the end of Highway 4 gives it a relatively remote character, while its harbour remains an important part of daily life.

Tofino is known as n̓ačiqs in the language of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, whose people have lived in the area since time immemorial. Nuu-chah-nulth traditions, language, art, and relationships with the land and sea remain important to the community. The Tofino Clayoquot Heritage Museum explores both Indigenous and settler history, including the area’s fishing and logging industries. Environmental activism is another important part of Tofino’s modern identity, with local efforts to protect old-growth forests and coastal ecosystems helping shape the community’s approach to conservation and responsible tourism.

Tofino is surrounded by beaches, rainforest, islands, and sheltered coastal waters. Pacific Rim National Park Reserve includes Long Beach, Wickaninnish Beach, and rainforest trails, while Cox Bay and Chesterman Beach are popular locations for surfing and beach walks. The region supports a wide range of wildlife, including black bears, sea otters, grey whales, humpback whales, sea lions, and numerous seabirds. Boat trips provide access to Clayoquot Sound and more remote coastal areas, while forest boardwalks offer close views of towering western red cedar, Douglas fir, ferns, and other rainforest vegetation.

Seafood is central to Tofino’s food culture, with salmon, lingcod, Dungeness crab, spot prawns, oysters, and other Pacific ingredients appearing on local menus. Restaurants and food trucks also draw on seasonal products gathered from the surrounding land and sea, including mushrooms, fiddleheads, salal berries, and kelp. Tofino has a strong arts community, with galleries, Indigenous carving, public installations, and a self-guided art walk throughout town. Surfing is another defining feature, supported by several beaches and local instructors. The combination of Indigenous culture, marine traditions, food, art, and rainforest landscapes gives Tofino a distinct West Coast identity.

Kamloops, located in the interior of British Columbia, sits at the meeting point of the North and South Thompson Rivers. Today, visitors can explore this rich cultural heritage at the Secwépemc Museum and Heritage Park, where trails lead through archaeological sites and reconstructed pit houses.
