Malibu is a coastal city in Southern California, stretching along the Pacific Ocean west of Los Angeles. Malibu Lagoon State Beach protects a coastal wetland where Malibu Creek reaches the Pacific, while Point Dume State Beach and Natural Preserve features cliffs, coves, tide pools, and trails with views along the coastline. Leo Carrillo State Park extends across beaches, tide pools, coastal hills, and canyons farther west. The Santa Monica Mountains behind Malibu provide opportunities for hiking and wildlife observation, with habitats ranging from coastal sage scrub and chaparral to oak woodland. The coastline also supports seabirds, seals, sea lions, and migrating whales.
Malibu’s food culture is influenced by its coastal location and Southern California agriculture, with restaurants serving seafood, Mexican dishes, California-style cuisine, and locally sourced produce. The Malibu Farmers’ Market connects the community with nearby growers and food producers. The city is also closely associated with surfing, particularly around Surfrider Beach, where consistent Pacific swells have made the area an important part of Southern California’s surfing culture. Malibu’s combination of beaches, mountains, protected wetlands, vineyards, and relatively limited urban development gives it a distinctive landscape despite its proximity to Los Angeles.
