Chaguaramas is a coastal area on the northwestern peninsula of Trinidad, extending along the Gulf of Paria toward the Bocas del Dragon. Macqueripe takes its name from an Indigenous Arawak settlement, while the peninsula later became associated with cocoa estates and other agricultural activity. During the Second World War, the United States established a major naval base at Chaguaramas, resulting in the relocation of communities across the northwestern peninsula. The former military presence remains visible in historic buildings and sites. Today, Chaguaramas reflects Trinidad’s wider multicultural identity through local food, music, recreation, and maritime traditions.
The peninsula contains several notable natural attractions. Macqueripe Bay is a sheltered beach where swimming and snorkeling are possible, while the Chaguaramas Boardwalk follows the waterfront and provides space for walking and cycling. Inland trails lead through Tucker Valley, including the Bamboo Cathedral, where tall bamboo forms an arched canopy above the road. Gasparee Caves on nearby Gaspar Grande contain limestone formations, sinkholes, and an underground crystal pool. Chaguaramas also provides access to offshore islands and secluded bays, while forested areas support birds, monkeys, and other wildlife. These varied environments make the peninsula an important recreational and ecological area.
Food in Chaguaramas reflects Trinidad’s diverse culinary traditions, with waterfront restaurants and casual food businesses serving seafood, Creole dishes, roti, doubles, grilled meats, and other local favourites. Fresh fish and seafood are especially appropriate to the peninsula’s maritime setting, while Trinidadian staples such as bake and shark, pelau, callaloo, and curry dishes can be found across the wider region.
