Rundu is the capital of Namibia’s Kavango East Region and a major town on the southern bank of the Kavango River, opposite Angola. Unlike much of Namibia’s dry interior, the area around Rundu is shaped by a permanent river, wooded floodplains, and fertile land used for small-scale agriculture. The river supports fishing, boating, and birdlife, while the town serves as a commercial center for communities along the Kavango. Rundu also provides a gateway to the Kavango Open Africa Route, which continues east toward Divundu and nearby protected areas.

Rundu is closely connected to the Kavango people, whose communities include the Mbunza, Vakwangali, Vagciriku, Shambyu, and other cultural groups. Fishing, farming, woodcarving, basket weaving, and pottery remain important parts of local life. The Mbunza Living Museum, beside Lake Samsitu west of town, presents traditional fishing, farming, cooking, basket and mat weaving, pottery, blacksmithing, and drum-making. Rukwangali is widely spoken in the region, alongside several other local languages. Rundu’s cultural identity is therefore strongly linked to the river and the practical skills developed around it.

The Kavango River is Rundu’s central natural attraction, with opportunities for boating, fishing, bird-watching, and canoe trips. Riverside areas offer views across the water toward Angola, while nearby woodland provides habitat for a range of birds and wildlife. The Mbungura Woodcraft Cooperative is another notable stop, where local craftspeople produce carved furniture, canoes, utensils, and decorative objects. Further east, the Kavango Open Africa Route connects Rundu with Divundu, the Mahango area, and other riverine landscapes. These places provide access to wetlands, wildlife areas, and traditional communities.

Fish from the Kavango River forms an important part of the local food culture, while crops grown along the river include produce suited to the fertile strip beside the water. Traditional Kavango cuisine and cooking methods can be explored at the Mbunza Living Museum, where visitors can also learn about fishing and food preparation. Rundu is particularly known for its woodcarving tradition, with local artisans producing dugout canoes, drums, household objects, and carved artworks. The town’s position beside one of Namibia’s major rivers gives it a distinct character within a country better known for deserts and dry landscapes.

Swakopmund
Swakopmund
Swakopmund, on Namibia’s Atlantic coast, is a town where desert meets ocean in striking contrast. Founded by German colonists in the late 19th century, its streets are lined with colonial-era buildings painted in pastel colors, giving the town a distinctly European feel.
