The SLS is an all-new high-performance sports car and the first car completely designed and developed by Mercedes-AMG. With an aluminum body and gullwing doors reminiscent of the legendary 300SL from the 1950s, the SLS AMG features a front mid-engine layout with a rear transaxle for optimum weight distribution. On normal freeway jaunts, the SLS is more grand tourer than supercar. With the optional AMG Dynamic Suspension system in Sport mode, the ride feels no different than that of an SL550. The suspension does an admirable job of soaking up everything from Botts Dots to city potholes big enough to make a G550 whimper. Other than the hum of wind that emanates from dropping the soft top which opens and closes in 11 seconds, at speeds up to 31 mph it's hard to tell that you're driving a convertible. The AMG engineers took extra care to tighten the SLS Roadster, adding a carbon rear brace and a rear strut tower brace made of steel. Also, the walls in the lower aluminum side structures (rocker panel area) have been strengthened, while supplemental bracing has been added to the aluminum structure behind the dash.
